About this data

Sources, calculations and how this interactive was developed.

Data sources and methodology

Maine Votes uses absentee voting records published by the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions. It displays 2026 general election absentee ballot requests and accepted ballots, with comparisons to the 2022 and 2024 general elections.

The absentee return rate is accepted ballots divided by ballot requests. Geographic totals are aggregated from election records; repeated voter records are consolidated in processing. Registered voter share compares accepted ballots with the March 7, 2026 active registered voter report. That measure is not official turnout.

Data reflect the latest available published state records, not real-time ballot receipts. Municipal reporting and data entry can lag. Registration party is not a measure of candidate support, and absentee voting does not represent all votes cast.

Official sources

Municipality, county, Maine House district and Maine Senate district boundaries were obtained from the Maine GeoLibrary and converted to GeoJSON for this interactive map.
